Here’s what an apprentice should expect when starting an apprenticeship:
A Supportive Learning Environment
- You will be working alongside experienced professionals who will guide and mentor you.
- You will be offered hands-on experiences to learn from.
- You will have a workplace mentor or supervisor to support your development.
A Mix of Work and Study
- 80% of your time will be spent working in a setting relatable to your apprenticeship.
- 20% of your time will be off-the-job training (Face to face and online learning, completing coursework, undertaking new elements of the job etc).
- You’ll work towards a qualification, such as:
- Level 2 (entry-level).
- Level 3 (more advanced, allows for key worker responsibilities).
- Level 5.
Responsibilities in the Setting
As an apprentice, you will:
✔️ Help with children’s learning and development, supporting activities like storytelling, arts and crafts, or outdoor play (Course applicable).
✔️ Assist with daily routines, including mealtimes and daily education (Course applicable).
✔️ Learn how to handle and bath a variety of dog breeds (Course applicable).
✔️ Learn about safeguarding and child welfare to ensure a safe environment.
✔️ Develop communication skills.
✔️ Gain confidence.
Supervision & Feedback
As an apprentice, you will:
- Your employer and training provider will monitor your progress through regular assessments and observations.
- You will need to complete a portfolio of your work, including reflections and evidence of your skills. You will have the full support from your skills tutor when completing your portfolio.
- At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll take an End-Point Assessment (EPA) to demonstrate what you’ve learned.
Pay and Benefits
- If you’re under 19 or in your first year of an apprenticeship, you’ll be paid at least £6.40 per hour (April 2024 rates).
- If you’re 19+ and have completed the first year, you’ll earn the National Minimum Wage for your age.
- You’ll also get paid holidays, sick leave, and workplace benefits like other employees.
Career Progression
After completing your apprenticeship, you could:
- Continue working in your setting.
- Progress to a higher-level qualification (if starting at Level 2).
- Move on to higher-level qualifications if applicable in your sector.
